Living in the Charente

The Charente is department 16 of France and is part of the Poitou-Charentes region. The area is known for its Cognac vineyards, the historical heritage and for the Angoulême festivals, it’s an ideal place for family life.

Things to do in the Charente: excursions and tourism

Throughout the year there are a lot of things to do in the Charente. The department is animated by several festivals:

  • International Comics Festival – Annual festival, in January, that transforms the city for a weekend into city comics. The event is devoted to French and foreign comics (for example manga).
  • Circuit des Remparts – Race and annual exhibition, in September, of vintage cars and super cars. The race takes place between the old city walls.
  • • Confolens Festival – Folklore festival, in August, during 6 days the city of Confolens becomes the world center of dance and folk music.
  • Cognac Blues Passion – Annual music festival, in July, dedicated to African-American music takes place in the city of Cognac. Rock stars, pop and more soul are over, such as Lenny Kravitz, Jamie Cullum or Charlie Winston.
  • • Festival Musique Métisses  – Annual music festival, in May, focused on diversity, with world music, both reggae and jazz.

The department of the Charente is also full of natural resources and historical heritage:

  • Visit the vineyards of Cognac – vineyards where cognac is made to make Cognac or Pineau des Charentes.
  • • The Charente department regularly organizes « archaeological nights » in the different villages to discover the local historical heritage.

The shops in the Charente

For shopping, the agency advises you to go to Angoulême. You will find the pedestrian zone, with many shops, the shopping center of the Champ de Mars, as well as the commercial areas on the outskirts of Champniers and Soyaux.

For shopping, there are nearly 110 supermarkets, hypermarkets in the department, mainly in Angouleme, Cognac, Confolens, Barbezieux, Ruffec and Chalais.  Don’t panic, we have many local markets, as well as markets for fresh produce in towns and villages. The Charente is a gastronomic country especially known for melon.
